We are blessed in Raleigh's District D with a wonderful small business community, celebrated dining and entertainment options, a world-renowned University, wonderful park system, art that inspires, a professional sports team, fantastic historic neighborhoods, and sustained heavy investment in our community from a number of stakeholders, including myself. As a youth hockey coach, I've learned each season that you need to utilize the skills and resources of all your players (partners) to succeed as a team (community). As a Council Member I will engage these partners and look to them when solving our communities' growing pains in order to make sure that none are left behind. Connecting our now healthy downtown core to Dix Park to the University and future Downtown Raleigh South with easy and accessible public transportation would be a concerted effort of mine as the Bus Rapid Transit takes shape and new highways south and east of us open bringing even more people to enjoy our community.
One project that I will be working to make a reality is the Raleigh Aerial Cableway. I will partner with leaders across the political aisle, like Joseph Huberman, to bring this exciting idea to life.
I have personally found success in this district and surrounding towns by researching local properties, reviewing long range plans, observing the roads/utilities and making thoughtful long-term investments based upon my own personal hunches combined with the advice of those who have succeeded before me. It's fascinating to review a 30 year plan and live in an area long enough to see it become reality. As a Council Member I will continue to seek out information provided to us by leading professionals, trust our city staff, provide sound recommendations, listen to our leaders at Dix Park, Hillsborough St BID, NC State, CAMPO, and vote with long range planning in mind of keeping this city a desirable place to call home. I will not be afraid to ask questions or present alternatives, nor go against the grain if necessary. I will also champion ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units), support cottage court developments, and work to provide more supply of housing in our backyards resulting in economically driven affordable housing.
Our community is an exceptional place to live, work, and play thanks to our neighbors willing to create, inspire, help, protect, teach and invest their time and resources in Raleigh. As a city we should utilize our great resources to promote those with a powerful vision. As a city we should create usable spaces for those wanting to engage with one another and implement the Park Bond as planned if passed. If not, I will assist and support the preparation of a revised Park Bond for the next election. As a city we should promote connectivity and preserve our natural beauty for all to enjoy. As your City Council Member in District D, I will work to promote those places, programs, and individuals who bring forward ideas for a bigger, better Raleigh, and those who hope to live here another 30 years to watch it unfold again.
I will work to promote the expansion of ideas like the Hillsborough $4 Food Walk where restaurants and bars offer $4 small plate offerings for customers to introduce locals to the diverse and delicious food and beverages available from our Hillsborough Street District merchants during their normal business hours.
